The idea for the Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition came about at a time when the state of Queensland was suffering severe drought. Presentations are to commence from the stage. Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is an academic competition developed by The University of Queensland (UQ), Australia. The premise of the competition is to develop academic, presentation and research communication skills. To conserve water, residents were encouraged to time their showers, and many people had a three minute egg timer fixed to the wall in their bathroom. In 2020 due to social distancing measures in place relating to the COVID-19 pandemic the 3MT® competition will be in a virtual format. Developed by The University of Queensland (UQ), the exercise cultivates students’ academic, presentation, and research communication skills. The 3MT® is a professional and highly engaging international competition that challenges PhD candidates to present their research in appropriate language to an intelligent but non-specialist audience in the space of three minutes. This is a fun, fast-paced global competition developed by the University of Queensland to enhance your academic, presentation and research communication skills. An 80,000 word PhD thesis would take 9 hours to present. Participants have just three minutes to explain the breadth and significance of their research projects to a non-specialist audience. Competitors have three minutes to present their thesis and its significance in an inspiring and captivating way.
